The Best Meme Halloween Costumes of 2018

$

Dressing up as a meme for Halloween is a risky proposition. A person can either win the holiday by cleverly recreating a popular and topical meme from the year, but picking the wrong meme can be a massive source of cringe. This list celebrates the costumes that won Halloween with their originality, execution, and in some cases, cuteness.

The Best Memes From Today's Nintendo Direct

$

The final Super Smash Brothers Ultimate Nintendo Direct ran this morning and the Smash community, as it is wont to do, went nuts. The major announcement was the inclusion of three new fighters: Ken from Street Fighter, Incineroar from Pokémon, and Piranha Plant from the Super Mario series. This is a far cry from the infamous "Grinch leak" which promised Geno, Banjo Kazooie, and Shadow the Hedgehog, among others. Also, the recent trend of Smash trailers literally killing characters reached a new high when a trailer for the game's adventure mode killed literally everyone except Kirby. Needless to say, some were stoked, some were disappointed, and everybody made memes. Here are some of our favorite parodies of today's Smash direct.

The Best Deltarune Memes

Undertale, if you'll remember, spawned a deluge of memes affecting the internet to this very day. When its sequel, Deltarune, surprise-released last week, it was only natural that the original game's meme-literate fanbase would get straight to work spoofing it. The game's colorful cast, particularly Ralsei, proved ripe for the fandom, and our Deltarune gallery currently sits at over 370 images. Here are some of our favorites.

The Best 'Smash Ultimate' Trailer Remixes

$

We know Nintendo and Masahiro Sakurai are geniuses, but with the latest trailer for Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, they may have pulled their greatest trick yet.

The "'Everyone Is Here' Banner Comes to Life" trailer lacks music. It works perfectly well without, as the ambient sounds of battle do enough to fill in the space, but the lack of a backing track was a gift for memers, as dozens of creators remixed the trailer with different music to give the trailer a personalized flair. The result: the trailer received thousands of retweets and millions of combined views, all with the free, organic spread thanks to the creativity and zealotry of the Smash Brothers fanbase. If this was the intent, you gotta tip your hat to whoever came up with that idea. It's a win-win: Nintendo gets oodles of free publicity, and we get sweet, awesome memes. Here are some of our favorite remixes of the latest Ultimate trailer.

Tumblr is truly a magical place where you can see the extremes of what the internet has to offer. In addition to the oodles of pornography that has allegedly placed them in hot water with Apple resulting in their mobile app being deleted from the iOS app store, the site also has an epidemic of advertisements that make no goddamn sense. In addition to ads for, say, homeowner's insurance which are surely raking in the dough from the site's 13-26 demographic, Tumblr has ads so inscrutable no human could possibly comprehend what they are attempting to sell. From vaguely threatening clickbait to bizarrely horny patriot fanfiction, here are some of the weirdest ads that have run on Tumblr.

Lingvistov is an online Illustration & Gift shop which was founded by two friends in Russia, Asya, and Landysh. Both graduates from Linguistic University, the two first created Lingvistov as the School of English via Skype in 2012, which still exists today. However, they had an extreme fondness for illustration art, cartoons, comics, memes, and brilliant English humor. Thus, they started making Lingvistov doodles. (Lingvistov doodles are unique drawings created by Landysh, and they usually contain a funny joke or a well-known saying.) SpongeBob SquarePants, particularly its legendary first three seasons, easily ranks among the best children's entertainment of all time. For that, we have Stephen Hillenburg to thank. The show's creator helped shape the lives and senses of humor for an entire generation with his deceptively simple show about an enthusiastic sponge, his dimwitted but goodhearted starfish friend, his ornery octopus neighbor, his penny-pinching crab boss, and a host of other memorable characters operating in Bikini Bottom. After his passing yesterday at the age of 57 due to complications with ALS, internet users poured out their affection for the man who created a legacy that is felt to this very day, nearly twenty years after the first episode of SpongeBob.

Sonic the Hedgehog is an amazing franchise that will never die no matter how many crappy video games are added to its already stunning collection of crap. The remarkably resilient Sonic fanbase will soon be tested again with a live-action film that was announced with a poster that everyone agreed did not look very good. It features a hunky, hairy Sonic that exists both in uncanny valley and in the minds of hundreds of DeviantArt posters.

KYM Review: Fandoms of 2018

$
0
0

Editor’s Note: This article is part of Know Your Meme’s annual review series looking back at some of the most memorable and popular memes, events and people that defined internet culture in 2018 as we know it.

W

ith few exceptions, blockbusters dominated fandoms this year. Huge video games, multi-billion dollar franchises, and Shrek (again) proved to have the most influential fanbases of 2018, dominating the meme landscape. Those who regularly check Know Your Meme’s top image galleries won’t be surprised by this list. Smash, Spider-man, and Avengers all have rightful spots in our top ten. But some smaller indie delights found their way to our top ten as well. Toby Fox’s Deltarune followed up his wildly popular Undertale admirably, while ultra-violent anime Goblin Slayer proved to be the top source of animemes of the year. And naturally, it wouldn’t be a year in fandom without a little bit of horny sprinkled in, as 2018 was the year Gijinka went mainstream. Here’s our look at the top fanbases of the year.

Super Smash Brothers Ultimate

The coming of Super Smash Brothers Ultimate was in many ways the gamer equivalent of the second coming of Christ. Most of 2018 was spent in an unbearable wait for the game’s 2018 release, and every scrap of news to come out about it was instantly the most popular thing going on in video games. Every Nintendo Direct about Smash spawned memes. Every new character announced was cause for simultaneous praise to the heavens and curses to Satan.

The Smash fanbase is nothing if not dedicated, and in 2018, it scoured every corner of the internet for news about the game, at one point swearing to the legitimacy of a (false) leak that somehow included The Grinch. The fans are also incredibly creative, making seven wildly entertaining memes in 2018, including Everyone is Dead Except Kirby, Galeem’s Laser Parodies, Inkling Girl’s Eye, and Everyone is Here. All the work and waiting has seemed to pay off, however. Upon release, the game scored an astounding 93 on Metacritic. As for me, I’m writing this on December 7th, and all I want is to go home and rip the game open.

Moe Anthropomorphism

Moe anthropomorphism seemed to take over literally everything in 2018. The year began with a stream of gijinka characters rising alongside planets and the inexplicably popular Tide Pod craze, and thus was born Tide Pod-chan, Clorox-chan, and Shaving Cream-chan. The whole thing was like that ProZD skit about ‘Chairem’ anime.

Of course, when it seemed like chan-mania (mania-chan?) had finally died down, Nintendo put a Super Crown on Toadette and we had to do the whole thing again, this time with every Nintendo character in the Mario universe. It seemed as though every meme this year came with at least one cute anime girl interpretation. If everyone knows what Rule 34 is, 2018 made the case for the creation of a Rule 34b: If it exists, there’s anime girl art of it.

Deltarune

After dominating the meme scene for several years, Undertale finally saw its follow-up in late October of 2018 with Deltarune. Toby Fox, game developer and fandom sparker, launched another rabid fandom with the second game in the series.

Reviews for the game have been almost uniformly positive, as Deltarune currently sits with an impressive 9.1 user score on Metacritic. As with Undertale, Deltarune features a massive fandom based around its cast. This time, adorable characters like Ralsei, Lancer, Jevil, and Susie received tons of fan art, and a full-blown ship, Krusle, graced Tumblr and Archive of Our Own. Deltarune also isn’t yet fully released, which means that with each new installment will come a new wave of memes, fan art, and parodies. Get ready to see Deltarune for a long time.

A Star Is Born

A Star Is Born looks headed for Oscar glory, but I’m sure that means dick to Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga in comparison to the slot they secured in our Top Fandoms of 2018 list. While critics loved their performances in the film, everyone else cared about this two-second exchange in the trailer in which Cooper tells Lady Gaga “I just want to take another look at ya.” Here it is for ten minutes:

The cheesy exchange, complete with Lady Gaga’s sheepish smile, reverberated as an exploitable on Twitter for months. Cooper’s dialogue got replaced with all the good news the internet had to offer, including how one time the guy who Mr. Belvedere sat on his balls and they had to stop filming for a couple days. To date though, the best parody is this stellar recreation by comedian Ayo Edebiri:

Goblin Slayer

When a Goblin Slayer anime was announced, fans were worried that the show wouldn’t live up to the gut-busting, soul-draining gore of the manga. Boy, how they were wrong! While true, episode one of the anime doesn’t include visuals of the notoriously brutal rape scene from the manga’s first chapter, Goblin Slayer, fans were nonetheless adequately traumatized, leading to one of the quickest growing anime fandoms of 2018.

The anime was wildly popular on /r/animemes throughout the year, overtaking other hits like Miss Komi and My Hero Academia. Goblin Slayer’s stoic demeanor and the Game of Thrones-esque vibe to the show made it an addictive watch, and helped spawn the You Get Used to It template. In a year dominated by anime waifus, that the top anime fandom of the year was devoted to brutal gore, dismemberment, and blood is something of a miracle.

Fortnite

Fortnite is a dumb game for babies and I will die on this hill. However, there’s no denying that it had an absolutely massive impact in 2018. The free-to-play smash hit was everywhere this year, consuming and integrating pop culture like a gelatinous blob. Thanos entered the game around the time of Infinity War. John Wick featured prominently in one promotion. The game's most famous player, Ninja, became arguably the first mainstream gamer.

As with any game that gets this popular, Fortnite has generated its fair share of controversy and backlash. People balked at the idea of parents hiring Fortnite tutors. Memers have mocked fans of the games as prepubescent virgin idiots. Meme, dance, and PUBG creators all have threatened or gone through with lawsuits against Fortnite, but it doesn’t appear as though the juggernaut game will suffer any adverse effects from that. For the time being, it doesn’t look like Fortnite is going away soon.

Avengers: Infinity War

As 2017 was dominated by the Star Wars prequels, 2018 was all about Avengers: Infinity War. Marvel’s monster movie made memes materialize marvelously through much of the year. Over the course of 2018, we’ve documented twelve memes based on the film.

Thanos dominated much of the meme landscape with several of his iconic lines and, of course, the snap. /r/ThanosDidNothingWrong became one of the most populous subreddits. There was even a car that kind of looked like the character which took off. With Avengers: Endgame coming in 2019, we can anticipate another load of Avengers content, but Endgame has a massive game of catch-up to play if it wants to have the impact of Infinity War.

Spider-Man

It seems fitting that on the year of Stan Lee’s passing, Spider-Man would have its biggest year in pop culture since arguably the first Tobey Maguire film. Thanks to Tom Holland’s memorable turn as Spider-Man in Infinity War and a very good Spider-Man video game, 2018 was very much the year of Peter Parker.

That should continue well into 2019. In addition to DLC for Marvel’s Spider-Man being released in installments and a follow-up Avengers movie, Spidey fans will be treated to Into the Spider-verse, an absolutely delightful-looking adaptation blending multiple interpretations of Spider-Man. Hopefully seeing arguably his greatest creation dominate pop culture helped Stan the Man go out with a smile.

PewDiePie

In 2018, PewDiePie took a break from being a controversy magnet (well, very nearly) and somehow got the entire internet to rally behind him. Felix Kjellberg’s supremacy as the most subscribed-to user on YouTube was threatened this year by T-Series, an account that makes Bollywood music videos, and when it seemed that the account would surpass Pewds, YouTubers united to keep PewDiePie on top.

The whole saga marks an ideological stand for YouTube creators. PewDiePie himself has stated he doesn’t care if he’s no longer number one, and it truly means very little in the grand scheme of things if T-Series gains more subscribers than a Swedish ham who mocks memes and video games. But the principle behind the campaign is that the internet should be the land of creators. Keeping PewDiePie number one is the internet’s rebellion against the increasing corporatization of the internet, which can be seen in fronts like the Net Neutrality battle and Tumblr’s banning of adult content. Even if the PewDiePie campaign is doomed to fail, it marked a solid final stand against the encroachment of boring, monetized internet.

Shrek

Christ it’s 2018 and we’re STILL doing Shrek memes. It’s stunning. Shrek’s big meme of the year was his Cringe Compilation, a bizarrely hilarious reaction of image taking Shrek’s smug mug mocking the truly ridiculous cringe-inducing internet content.

If that weren’t enough, fans banded together to create Shrek Retold, film compiling dozens of creators remaking Shrek scene-for-scene. It’s an impressive ode to this pretty good film, human achievement, and human stupidity. But, we have to ask… is THIS peak Shrek? What else can be done now that fans have literally turned the entire film into a shitpost? Who knows. Shrek is Love, Shrek is Life. And perhaps Shrek is forever.

C

onfusion, oldies and idiots took center stage in 2018’s music meme landscape. Some of the top music memes of the year played on the radical disconnect between a song’s content and the meme’s joke. One of our top ten finds people risking death for viral fame, and another one was so abhorrent and miserable everyone on the planet should be ashamed for making it a thing (and no, it isn’t 6ix9ine). There was also a lot to like about the music memes of 2018: three of the ten top music memes of the year reference songs released before 1984, all of which are absolute bangers, while one music meme provided a vehicle for some of the most creative remixes this side of “Steamed Hams.” Overall, meme music in 2018 was a mixed bag full of bizarre revivals, puzzling trends, one-hit wonders and Kanye West farts. Actually, come to think of it, that’s how it is every year.

Africa

Well, we finally did it. We killed “Africa” by Toto. More specifically, Weezer killed “Africa” by Toto, but more on that in a moment.

“Africa” is an amazing song. Critically brushed aside at the time of release, Toto’s ode to the massive continent came back in style in the 2010s thanks to a cultural reevaluation of 80s cheese in the form of vaporwave as well as the song’s over-the-top earnest chorus, deceptively tricky verses, and bitchin’ keyboard solo. Over the course of the decade it returned to the forefront of the internet in the forms of dozens of covers and parodies.

And then Weezer got a hold of it. Weezer has a history of using memes in extremely dorky ways, trotting out all the YouTube stars of 2006 in their Pork and Beans video and referencing Damn Daniel in 2016’s California Kids. This year, Weezer responded to a tweet from a 14 year old who wanted them to cover “Africa.” They did. It was kinda cool (though not as cool as their tight AF Rosanna cover).

Then they did it again and again, spending the year going on live television to play “Africa”, employing Weird Al Yankovic to parody Rivers Cuomo in an “Africa” video, and essentially committing the cardinal sin of memeing: don’t overplay the joke. “Africa” has had an amazing run this decade gaining the cultural relevance it rightfully deserves. But it’s time to give it a rest.

Take Me Home, Country Roads

After “Africa,” the other oldie the internet collectively went nuts over in 2018 was John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” The song has remained a pop culture staple since it was released in 1972, appearing in numerous films at critical plot points to lend scenes emotional gravitas, but it wasn’t until 2018 that a Fallout 76 teaser reminded everyone that this song fuckin’ slaps.

The period between that teaser and Fallout 76’s colossal shit of a release was a golden age for "Take Me Home, Country Roads." Suddenly memes about the track flooded subreddits and parodies swept through YouTube. RTGames began using the track in streams watched millions of times. All at once, the internet remembered that “Take Me Home, Country Roads” was an amazing song, and each new parody seemed to add to the song’s legacy as a crowd-pleasing banger. Who knows what John Denver would think of the things the internet has done to his song, but one hopes he’s looking down from (almost) heaven with a grin on his face.

Despacito 2 / Alexa Play Despacito

Despacito Don’t Die. Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee, and Justin Bieber’s ultra-popular 2017 hit holds the record for most-viewed YouTube video of all time and the honor of appearing on back-to-back KnowYourMeme Music Memes of the Year lists. In this 2018 edition, we celebrate the myriad ways “Despacito” spread throughout meme culture, primarily the memes “Despacito 2” and “Alexa Play Despacito.”

“Despacito 2,” of course, highlights the desire to return to a time when the song was inescapable, while “Alexa Play Despacito” (or more accurately, “This Is So Sad Alexa Play Despacito”) underlines the rush of dopamine that comes with every silky “Deeeespaaaaacito.” Both memes illustrate the song’s lasting effect on pop culture, a sugar high pop music hasn’t experienced in years. Of course, both are meant somewhat ironically, but the side effect of the constant memeing of “Despacito” is the deepening appreciation for just how good that song is. If we ever do get a “Despacito 2,” there’s no doubt in my mind the world would embrace it with open arms and welcome its return to supermarket background muzak with a knowing, warm smile.

Walmart Yodel Boy

There were a lot of great music memes that didn’t make this list. There was Gabriel Gundacker’s tightly effective parody of mediocre animated films with his over-the-top song Zendaya Is Meechee. There was Doja Cat’s silly but undeniable earworm Moo. Then there was this kid.

As if crafted by the algorithm that spits out guests for Ellen Degeneres, Mason Ramsey donned an old cowboy outfit, bleated like a goat in a Walmart and became an American sensation. He hit the perfect sweet spot of wholesome, old-timey, and precocious to immediately become the worst thing that you couldn’t escape from. His butchering of Hank Williams’ “Lovesick Blues” was the type of middle-America porn ripe for Moms to share in Facebook posts with captions like “Everything is so divisive right now, but this talented young man made me smile! :)” His rooster-squawking eventually landed him a spot at goddamn-Coachella and internet users spoofed him in videos that only served to remind everyone of how meme culture is just as susceptible to the very boomer crap it rails against. This kid sucks.

Kanye West and Lil Pump’s “I Love It”

Kanye West spent another year being a monstrous ass, accidentally doing a fascism and going on a rant so unhinged even Donald Trump was like dude, wtf? He also got around to releasing some music, some of which was literally poop, some figuratively poop. Of the latter was “I Love It,” his collaboration with Soundcloud meme rapper Lil Pump.

The video featuring the two rappers bobbling like Roblox characters in giant suits marked another baffling move from West, whose verse on the track will most likely be remembered for his repetition of the line “I’m a sick fuck, I like a quick fuck.” It was a gift to memelords online, and was naturally parodied in numerous videos and photoshops. With critics and fans agreeing that his 2018 album Ye was nowhere near his best work, perhaps 2018 marked the year Kanye West fully embraced his own memehood and we can all finally admit he hasn’t released any good music since My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (oh SNAP).

In My Feelings Challenge

Any viral challenge that requires a police intervention is alright in my book, which is what happened with the “In My Feelings Challenge.” The hit from Drake’sScorpion inspired people to jump out of moving cars and dance alongside it, leading to hilarious fails and terrific facepalms. Observe:

The song itself is fine, but what came of it was a ridiculous lesson in Darwinism. The popularity of this dangerous and dumb challenge led the Chief of Safety Advocacy at the National Transportation Safety Board to say, “don’t do this, you stupid idiots” (essentially). The ante was upped when it was announced that doing the “In My Feelings Challenge” could net participants up to a year in prison. Basically, the lesson here is don’t do anything because of Drake.

Crab Rave

It is scientifically impossible to not enjoy “Crab Rave.” Just look at these guys:

All these crabs havin’ the time of their lives. With its catchy melody and infectious beat, Noisestorm’s “Crab Rave” is delectable internet content. It appeared in remixes all through 2018, including a bizarre period where it was used in a gag with depressing messages such as “My wife left me” and “I want to die”; truly memes work in mysterious ways. The Crab Rave may not have been the most original meme to come out of 2018, but it was certainly one of the most enjoyable to listen to.

This Is America

Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” illustrates that you can never tell the internet what not to meme. Donald Glover’s dark and snaky bop on racial politics in America and the track’s powerful video blew critics and fans away the second it dropped, and as the listens piled up, so did the memes.

Simple object-labeling memes and remix videos of “This Is America” spread, going against the very message of Gambino’s song. In Hiro Murai’s music video, Glover dances while atrocities happen in the background, demonstrating the role black entertainment has in distracting viewers from the problems in the black community, particularly racially disproportionate police brutality. Vice attempted to step in and tell people that memeing the song was essentially proving Gambino’s dystopian vision of the country correct, but of course, this only led to the creation of more memes. While the memeing of “This Is America” may have been a disservice to the art itself, it undeniably left a mark on the internet’s conscious that was felt throughout the year.

Plastic Love

While City Pop, a genre of hitherto-forgotten glistening bangers from 1980s Japan, had been spreading through the internet through most of the 2010s thanks to its prevalence in the vaporwave community, 2018 saw its emergence as a dominant force online, and no song is more responsible for that trend than “Plastic Love.” Mariya Takeuchi’s 1984 sleeper hit has over 23 million views on YouTube at the time of writing thanks in large part to a ridiculously friendly YouTube algorithm that seemed to put it in everyone’s recommendations.

As YouTube force-fed the track into public consciousness, YouTubers got to work analyzing and paying tribute to Takeuchi’s hit. It grew into a singularly bizarre music meme, not as widely parodied as, say, Boney M’s “Rasputin” or “Shooting Stars”, but simply shared on the basis that it’s a really good song. Its legacy is all over current music trends, as pristine disco returns to the mainstream. In fact, one of K-pop’s biggest stars, Yubin, had to cancel the release of one of her songs because it sounded too much like “Plastic Love.” Takeuchi has had a very respectable career in her lifetime, but one wonders if she knows (and if so, how she feels) about the popularity her forgotten dancefloor hit has had in 2018.

Bongo Cat

Man, “Bongo Cat” rules. In many ways, “Bongo Cat” was the successor to the wildly popular “Steamed Hams” meme in that it was a video remix meme that just kept getting better. It all started when Twitter user @DitzyFlama upped a remix of a cat playing bongos to “Athletic” from the Super Mario World soundtrack.

And then, as with “Steamed Hams,” the joke was taken to incredible heights. At first Bongo Cat was mixed with the usual suspects (“Africa,” “Running in the 90s,” “Rasputin,” for example) but soon the remixes grew more obscure and the animations more elaborate. Wild edits include “We All Lift Together” from Warframe and “Rivers in the Desert” from Persona 5. The amount of creativity and artistic skill displayed in participants of the “Bongo Cat” meme was stunning, making it easily one of the most entertaining “upping the ante” meme arcs of the year.

lmost in spite of ourselves, we made it to the end of 2018. The year that promised to be worse than 2017 lived up to expectations, especially politically, as politicians continued to dive head-first into the world of Internet memes.

The year could be described in one word: "escalation." It's as if the rest of the American political system had been trying to outdo President Trump, after a year of pee tape jokes. What did we get? More conspiracy theories, stranger sex scandals and a 76-year-old man adopting the nickname "Cocaine Mitch."

Trump was outdone, in many ways, by the rest of American politics. For a guy that had a whole list devoted to him last year, he'd be disappointed to know that he only appears once on this year's 10. Maybe it's peak 2018 that a hockey mascot would overtake the president in most-memed orange-hued humanoid creature.

Through it all, the memescape survived 2018 with a series of diverse and deeply weird political memes. These might not be the best or even the most popular, but based on the additions made to Know Your Meme this year, this list provides a roadmap to the year that was, traveling across the internet and both sides of the political spectrum.

Cocaine Mitch

In this volatile and unpredictable era of politics, it's hard to do something that can actually shock and/or surprise people. Then again, most senatorial candidates aren't like West Virginia's own ex-con-turned-politician Don Blankenship. Released in April 2018, Blankenship's now-infamous campaign ad already had a lot going for it: a bad on-camera personality, conspiracy theories and numerous racial slurs. But they were almost all outdone by a toss-away nickname Blankenship gave to Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell in the ad's closing moments: "Cocaine Mitch." Referencing a shady controversy regarding cocaine found on a cargo ship owned by the family of McConnell's wife, the nickname struck a hilarious juxtaposition between McConnell's slow southern drawl and the speedy stereotypes of cocaine users. Weirder still, McConnell's team played along, tweeting a photoshopped version of the poster for the cartel-focused television series Narcos with McConnell standing in for Pablo Escobar.

Gritty

Whoever said the left can't meme must not be from Philadelphia. That's right, the hometown of the Fresh Prince lived up to its namesake with Gritty, the amorphous blob of orange fur that not only became the mascot for the Philadelphia Flyers, but also, inexplicably, the mascot for the anti-fascist movement known as Antifa. Looking like a meth-addicted Grimace, Gritty went from a point of cultural confusion to activist icon in mere weeks, appearing on protest signs and political action memes that claimed him for the left. Gritty's unwavering smile and refusal to blink serves as a stark reminder that the fight against fascism must never rest. So join Gritty and ice skate toward a new, Nazi-free day.

Dancing Theresa May

From across the pond comes a versatile meme featuring U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May, who, surprisingly, is an accomplished politician a dancer--or whatever you want to call this. Her moves, first captured in August 2018 during a visit to a high school in Cape Town, South Africa, would later be cemented in a casual walk across a stage set to ABBA's "Dancing Queen." Her bizarre, robotic gyrations and stone-faced English smirk didn't really help things as "Dancing Theresa May" went from video remix to image macro series in just a few weeks. Her cabinet members may be dropping like flies, and she may be out of the job in the next few weeks, but Dancing Theresa May will live on in all of our hearts.

Denver Riggleman Bigfoot Erotica Controversy

If there was ever a perfect encapsulation of American politics today, it would have to be Denver Riggleman's Bigfoot Erotica controversy. In July 2018, Democrat Leslie Cockburn shared an image of the cover art for her opponent Denver Riggleman's book The Mating Habits of Bigfoot and Why Women Want Him. Needless to say, the art featured an illustration of Bigfoot's massive penis. The cover art caused quite a stir, leaving to Riggleman to explain that it was all some inside joke. But because this is America, where only the weirdest thrive in politics, Riggleman won his campaign for Virginia's 5th congressional district. Welcome to the House of Representatives, Bigfoot porn guy. You'll fit in nicely.

QAnon

2018 was such a surreal and bizarre year online and in politics that the blending of the two made several unholy alliances. Only in a world where a Bigfoot erotica author be elected to Congress, could something as obviously fake and unfortunately resilient as QAnon thrive. QAnon is an impenetrable conspiracy theory of nonsense, backtracking and awful memes. But it's also a powerful force in Trumpism, giving the theory's followers an easy out whenever something isn't going the president's way. For the uninitiated, the basics of the theory are that President Trump and the man investigating him, special counsel Robert Mueller, are working together to take down a secret cabal of government insiders. Perpetuated by cryptic 4chan messages known as "breadcrumbs" and seeping into campaign rallies, Rosanne's tweets and even the White House, there seems to be no amount of misdeeds or misinformation that the theory won't suck up and spew out to fit its narrative. Q is everywhere and nowhere, which is exactly where the conspiracy needs him.

Donald Trump's "I Hear You" Note

Perhaps nothing exemplified the country's ineffective and unhelpful tactics against gun violence more than this photograph of President Donald Trump's notes taken during a meeting with the young survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Scrawled at the bottom of a list of talking points was the phrase "I hear you." The reminder for empathy is akin to "thoughts and prayers," a whitewashing of actual human lives lost in such a tragedy. For the most cynical, the meme served as confirmation of the meaningless words politicians say instead of taking action. "I Hear You" served as one of the resentful and saddest memes of the year, highlighting how little has been done to protect the American people, especially children, from gun violence, and perhaps, how little the people in charge actually want to do.

The Letter N

Internet Censorship in China has been steadily under attack as the world around the country grows ever more connected. That hasn't stopped the People's Republic from strengthening its Great Firewall by blocking everything, from the Big Yellow Duck to Winnie the Pooh. But in February 2018, the country went one step further by briefly adding the letter "N" to a list of banned terms. The murderer's row of banned terms included "incapable ruler," "I oppose," and the words "shameless" and "disagree." "N" didn't last on the banned list long and was returned to the alphabet shortly after the controversy went viral. Most are still unclear as to why the letter "N" was banned; however, some have speculated that the letter N is a signifier for an "unknown quantity," which could be seen as a reference to Xi Jinping's unknown amount of presidential terms.

Maybe Beto Can't Debate Ted Cruz Because

Ted Cruz might have fended off Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke in the 2018 midterm elections, but it wasn't because of his social media game. The incumbent Texas senator has had a long-standing feud with the internet, who has labeled him everything from the Zodiac Killer to Kevin from The Office. Things didn't get much better during the midterms when he tried to mock O'Rourke for being in a rock band in his 20s. It's as if Ted Cruz went out of his way to appear uncool. Shortly after the Texas GOP tweeted out its infamous "Maybe Beto can't debate Ted Cruz because he already had plans…" tweet, the internet leaped into action, mocking Cruz's appearance, attitude, voting record and general disposition. Ted Cruz regularly has trouble operating and navigating the Internet, so the whole thing was kind of unsurprising.

Scientist Ivanka Trump

On the other end of the spectrum, Scientist Ivanka Trump didn't necessarily rock the foundations of the Internet, but it did provide Trump's detractors with some reprieve from the harrowing headlines of the year. Ivanka, Trump's full-time daughter and White House counsel, playacting as a scientist, while working for such a vehemently anti-science administration, was surely enough to plaster a smile on liberal memers throughout the Internet. Ivanka posting this image as if anyone would be impressed only served to highlight her detractors' belief that the administration puts photo-ops over actual work. Memers agreed, appropriating the photograph for photoshops, image macros and reaction images.

The Gorilla Channel

2018 started with Fire and Fury, the unbridled exposé into the Trump White House. The controversy surrounding Michael Wolff's book was massive, sucking up all the air in the room in January 2018. One Fire and Fury-related meme clearly pinpointed a problem within American anti-Trumpism: Its propensity to believe anything. The Gorilla Channel, a mock excerpt from the book, written by frequent memer and Milkshake Duck-creator@pixelatedboat, painted Trump as an agitated baby, demanding to see his "gorilla channel," and Twitter ate it up. As a stand-in for every menial and banal Trump controversy, "The Gorilla Channel" deflated the occasional revelations of Wolff's book with an absurd premise that American liberals, always on the lookout for confirmation of Trump's incompetence, would be all-too-eager to eat up, and, sadly, they did.
