Origin
The earliest known origin of the phrase occurred on December 13, 2017. Twitter user @mrreptoid uploaded a photo of British hotelier David Morgan-Hewitt posing with the Queen of England. He captioned the photo "In awe at the size of this lad. absolute unit," referring to Morgan-Hewitt. "Absolute" is a British slang term used in so-called "lad culture" to mean "total".
The phrase began seeing use as a caption to pictures of various other large objects and people in the following days. On April 9th, 2018, The Museum of English Rural Life (@TheMERL) Twitter, run by Adam Koszary, who was a program manager for the Museum, posted a photograph of a ram along with the caption "Look at this absolute unit".
The Connection to Elon Musk
In April 2019, Elon Musk changed his Twitter bio to “absolute unit” and his picture to the image that of the sheep. @TheMerl Twitter account returned the compliment by changing its bio photo to one of Musk. It's unlear weather or not this Twitter exchange had anything to do with the hiring of Adam Koszary,
